On February 7, 2018, members of Seagull Leadership International visited the senior citizens at the Hotel of Oakland Village. We began our visits with arts and crafts. As Chinese New Year is just around the corner, we created lucky messages and New Year couplets to celebrate.
After helping them with their projects, we performed for the seniors to brighten up their day. Our first performer was Travis, playing a Chinese piece on the piano. His production put a smile on everyone’s faces. Afterwards, Anais performed a soothing performance of Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring by Bach. Next, young Hayton sang karaoke on a traditional Chinese song, which everyone began to clap to. Then, two friends, Jackie and Victory, sang and synchronized danced to another Chinese song, Little Apple, which made everyone laugh and smile. Ending the program, we had a spectacular performance, by Sophia Luo, of a peacock dance in majestic costume.
When the show ended, a few of the seniors there spoke to us and gave gratitude to our visit and how much they appreciated it. The music therapy session meant a lot to the senior citizens, and I am sure both the performers and viewers are looking forward to the upcoming sessions. The visit to the Hotel of Oakland Village was a success that the Seagull Leadership International group and the seniors will never forget.
